NYC: CheLi (First Time)

Pickled Daikon

It was very flavorful and slightly crunchy/juicy, making it a great way to start. 8/10

Xiao Long Bao

The dumplings were so full of delicious, umami-filled broth and made these simply on another level. The pure umami in the broth and filling made this one of the best soup dumplings I have ever tasted, with the wrapper being the perfect width and texture to hold the filling and the filling having a great flavor. 10/10

Smoked Fish

While the flavor of the glaze was great, the fish was over fried and ended up slightly dry and tough. The sticky glaze had a good taste, but lacked some depth. The fish was also a bit fishy. 6/10

Fried Rice

It was a decent tasting fried rice, but there was nothing special about this. 5/10

Qianlong Eel

The wrapping made a great combination with the eel. The texture of the outside was slightly sticky and the eel’s sweetness and saltiness with the scallion’s slight freshness and spiciness mixed well together. The crunch of the cucumber and flesh of the eel made a great textural difference as well. 10/10

Squash

The squash was so juicy and fresh. The texture had a slight snap on the outside with juice and softness on the inside. The garlic helped add some slight flavor to this refreshing, amazing dish. I did not expect squash to be this good. 10/10

Water Spinach

The vegetable was fresh, but it was mainly a standard dish. 6/10

Orange Minced Crab with Egg Custard

The caviar was random and out of place, so it could have just been not there at all. The crab/egg ratio was a bit low, and there was not much orange flavor. However, the umami of the crab with the umami of the egg made the flavors great, and the orange added a bit of sweetness. Could have been better but not a bad dish by any means. 8/10

Final review: The meal started off well and was relatively consistent, and the xiao long bao was amazing. This is a very authentic place with great flavors. 9/10
